Chapter 10: A walk in the park

London, Saturday, November 2, 1811

Darcy awoke to the delightful sight of the curve of Elizabeth’s cheek. He was wrapped around her, his arms enclosing her, her backside nestled to him. Her hands gently trapped his arms against her, even in sleep. The prospect of waking thus each morning warmed him, and he basked in the sweet reality of her.

The back of her neck enticed him where the braid fell away to reveal its strong lines. He pressed soft kisses to it, reveling in her scent and the soft texture of her skin beneath his lips.

She wiggled back against him, pressing his arms and hands more tightly to her body.

“There you are, beloved,” she said sleepily.

“Here I am,” he agreed, his hands beginning to roam her.

She turned over within his arms to face him.

“If we start that, we shall face a cold breakfast,” she said.

“They are used to my keeping an irregular schedule,” he explained, his hands roving her again.

“I see. That explains their acute timing with the warming pan last night. Did they know that we would end in your bed or do you think they warmed mine as well?”

The question distracted Darcy from his pursuit.

“Both, I should think. Though we are on our honeymoon.”

“Yes, we are, aren’t we?” she said, smiling at him and playing with his hair.

“Though I should have known from the name, I never suspected how sweet it would be,” he said, kissing her shoulder. She moaned softly with the pleasure of his caress, and it was with great difficulty that she extracted herself first from his embrace, then from the bed.

The fire was lit and their night clothes and dressing gowns hung before it. She reached out to clothe herself to his strangled protest.

“It seems I am not as indifferent to breakfast as you are, husband,” she observed.

“I shall have them serve us in the sitting room, that we might return to bed after, wife,” he said, re-assuming his night shirt and moving toward the bell cord.

“I thought we were to meet with your solicitors this morning,” she protested.

“They can wait upon our pleasure,” he said.

“But their intelligence may not,” she replied.

He groaned slightly, then smiled in acquiescence, looking at her longingly.

“Come, sir, we cannot let the forces of darkness triumph because we could not stay out of bed,” she reprimanded him smilingly.

“You are right as ever, dearest Elizabeth,” he said.

She kissed him and promised to meet him at the breakfast table. He sighed as she left and summoned his man to dress him.

Their carriage moved slowly. Elizabeth could not believe how many carriages thronged the roads, though Darcy seemed unsurprised, so this must be typical of a Saturday morning.

He explained that the solicitors believed Mr. Wickham to be murderer whom Darcy was tracking that he might be brought to justice, though whether of the formal or informal kind, they were scrupulously unclear.

The solicitor’s office was cramped with books and files, but the staff hastened to make their esteemed visitors comfortable.
